May 25th, 2008 - Glen Meakem: Promoting Growth Through Individual Responsibility

Glen in Studio

Glen focuses on economics this week, by opening with his “Why I’m Proud of America” series. Glen talks about some of the negativism he saw at Harvard Business School, and the decade of growth that followed.

Then, Glen talks with Terry Jacobs, President and CEO of Penneco Oil Company, about Barack Obama’s proposed windfall profits tax on the oil and gas industry. Glen concludes that this proposal is the result of a misunderstanding of economics, and draws a comparison with the Carter administration’s price caps in the 70s.

Next, Glen talks with Matthew Brouillette, President of the Commonwealth Foundation. Glenn and Matt discuss the bloated Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, and the many billions of dollars taxpayers could be saved if the Commission were privately run. Glen concludes that under such a policy, taxpayers could actually get money back.

Glen then talks about how eliminating the Turnpike Authority can also help promote growth and restore Governor Rendell’s reputation, and the importance of people taking individual responsibility.
