September 6-7, 2008 - Glen Meakem on the National Political Conventions

On this week’s program, I interview Aaron Cohen, President of Arena Strategies, a full-service business development, strategic planning, and political consulting firm based in Philadelphia.  Aaron and I discuss the recent national political conventions.  We weigh in on the presidential VP picks, specifically the excitement that Governor Sarah Palin brings to the presidential election.  We also explore the media coverage of the candidates and their speeches, and what McCain needs to do in order to win in November.

I revisit Governor Rendell’s plan to lease the Pennsylvania Turn Pike to a private company for 12.8 billion dollars.  I argue that this idea is fiscally responsible (it eliminates the need to place tolls on interstate 80) and could be a positive contribution to Rendell’s legacy as Governor if it becomes a reality.  I examine the recent national economic data and warn policy makers of past mistakes that plunged our country into a depression.

Finally, I celebrate the success of General David Petraeus’s troop build up in Iraq.  In spite of extreme opposition from both political parties, General Petraeus’s plan was overwhelmingly successful and has brought pride to our troops, our allies, and our country.  General Petraeus is simply one more example of why I am always proud to be an American.

Remember, on September 17, 2008, I will be moderating a panel of entrepreneurs, thinkers, and foreign policy leaders as part of the Pittsburgh Middle East Institute’s Conference Breakfast Event.  For more information on this and other appearances, click here.
