I begin this week’s program by reviewing some recent headlines. Whether it is swine flu, a contracting economy (6.1% reduction during the first quarter of 2009), looming tax increases for American businesses, investors, and leadership earners, or bad political policies from the left-wing, liberal Democrats in power, we Americans continue to be bombarded with negative news flow. A recent Rasmussen poll indicates that 47% of Americans now believe that our country’s best days are behind us.

I disagree! There is hope even in these bad times. For example, Republicans and moderate Democrats in the Senate defeated President Obama’s proposed mortgage cram down bill just this past week. Even with our current economic and political struggles, I believe that “it is still a wonderful life” — that any American who works hard can still be successful in the long run. It is a great time to focus on what we all must do to leave positive long term legacies for our families, our communities and our country. For more information, please see my column in this week’s Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

I reflect this week on Senator Arlen Specter’s decision to switch from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party. Arlen switched parties for one reason only - to increase his chances of extending his own time in the U.S. Senate. Arlen’s decision was not about what is best for America or Pennsylvania, or about changes in the Republican or Democratic Parties. It was about what is best for Arlen Specter. Arlen Specter will be 80 years old during the primary and general elections next year. This means he is running for a Senate term that will end when he is 86 years old. I hate to break it to Arlen, but we are all gong to do just fine without him in the U.S. Senate. He has the same “old man who must hold onto his power at all cost” disease that has afflicted mediocre leaders since the beginning of time. Arlen’s self absorption and ego only serve to remind us of how great our first leader, George Washington, was to set the precedent of stepping down from power peacefully after a rational period of time. When the writing was on the wall that he could not win the Republican Primary, Arlen could have gracefully announced that he would retire after 30 years in the Senate and chosen to become an “elder statesman” of America. Instead, he chose to betray the party, the contributors and the people who supported him for the past 33 years. Arlen is demonstrating to all of us just how small a person he is. Pat Toomey would have crushed Arlen Specter in a Republican Primary, now I believe Pat will beat Arlen in the general election.

This week I also discuss the White House’s moronic decision to fly Air Force One with an F-16 fighter escort 1,000 feet over New York harbor for a photo opportunity. (The Obama Administration wastes money and resources and creates pollution like this only for a photo opportunity and now they want to shove cap and trade legislation down our throats - give me a break!) This incredible blunder — that sent panicked New Yorker’s into the streets — demonstrates that government is by its very nature mediocre at what it does and that the left-wing politicians who are now in power are wrong to expand the power and scope of our government. [Liberals take note: our government knowingly scared the "you know what" out of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers just for a photo opportunity, and you still really think that government cares about people?]

I also discuss Chrysler’s decision to finally file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection, and President Obama’s First 100 days in office. Bankruptcy for Chrysler has been inevitable for at least the past five months and despite the billions of taxpayer dollars our government has wasted on Chrysler, the company’s future is finally in the hands of bankruptcy court. President Obama tried to “spin” this bankruptcy filing as a success, but economics and the rule of law are finally prevailing over political pressure from the Obama Administration. President Obama’s first 100 days have been a very difficult time for America as the left-wing has enacted many destructive new policies. In my view, our new President earns a grade of D.

Sara Mohsin returns to the program this week. Sara is a great friend of mine and a friend of this program. She and I discuss current mortgage rates-they are currently at all time lows-various types of mortgages and opportunities currently available, and how to qualify for a home mortgage. We also discuss the importance of a good credit score and steps you can take to improve your current rating. Sara knows buying a home is not a game and she is committed to helping her clients achieve financial success. So, if you are interested in buying a first home, buying a second home, investing in property, or even buying an airplane, please give Sara a call at 1-800-662-9550 or go to her website. Tell her that Glen Meakem gave you her number. She will be more than happy to give you advice and access to the type of loan you are looking for.

In spite of our current bad times, remember that life is long and our great country will recover from its current difficulties. Smile and have a great week and spread the truth about what is going on to the people in your life.
