This week, I begin the program by reflecting on both the recent Tea Party protests that have spread across the United States, and the confused, angry and belligerent response to these protests by prominent Democrats.
It was my privilege to MC a Tea Party Protest in Boyce Park (Pittsburgh area) on Wednesday. I met many terrific Americans who are genuinely concerned about the policies that are being promoted and implemented by our current administration and the liberals in Congress. I regularly voice my own concerns regarding Obama’s Agenda on this radio program, at similar protests around the Pittsburgh area, and in my bi-weekly column. The bottom line is that the majority of the American people do not want President Obama’s destructive Healthcare reform agenda (even after his Wednesday address), do not want the job killing and tax increasing “Cap and Trade” bill, do not want the union empowering “Card Check” legislation, do not approve of massive increases in government spending, and do not approve of Obama’s failed foreign policies.
This message has been clearly delivered to Washington D.C. law makers not only at Tea Party events, but also at hundreds of town hall meetings held across the United States this summer. And yet, our elected officials are baffled by our resistance to their bad policies. Democrats in particular are unable to accept the idea that thousands of middle-class Americans-without being paid-regularly attend these events. As far fetched as it must seem, it is easier for them to conclude that all opposition is manufactured by “evil mongers” who are supported by greedy corporations and industries.
I also comment on President Obama’s failed foreign policies. A recent United States government report indicates that Iran will acquire nuclear weapons in less than 1 year. Making matters worse-in spite of Israeli protests-Russia plans to sell Iran the ICBMs necessary to deliver them to long range targets. Because Obama has similarly failed to engage North Korea in a compelling fashion they also are now on the verge of becoming a permanent nuclear threat. When it comes to keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorist dictators who regularly threaten the U.S. and our allies, President Obama has completely failed us in just eight months.
I then interview Nathan Benefield, Director of Policy Research with the Commonwealth Foundation. Nathan wrote a terrific piece titled, “Whoops, we were wrong,” which details how he (and others including me) assumed that Obama would choose to lead from the economic center of the political spectrum much like President Bill Clinton did in the final six years of his Presidency. Unfortunately for America, President Obama is governing from the hard left and both Nathan and I were clearly wrong.
I also interview Jerry Bowyer, economist, syndicated columnist and CNBC Contributor about the current state of the economy. The overall unemployment rate has now reached 9.7% and young people have been particularly affected with 25.5% of teenagers unable to find work. Jerry and I agree that there is a direct correlation between these high figures and the recent increases in the minim wage rate. Coupled with record deficits and increased federal spending, Jerry doubts that we will see any significant economic recovery in the short term.
Since 2001, each year on September 11, many Americans pause to remember our fellow citizens who died at the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93. We remember that there is real evil in the world and that there are many despotic leaders who wish to harm the United States. The events surrounding Flight 93 are particularly inspiring to me. Individual Americans aboard that doomed plane were able to organize and carry out an effective counter attack against the terrorists who seized control. Although unable to save their own lives, because of their determination to take back that plane, the lives of many other Americans were spared.
This kind of grass roots courage-so typical of so many Americans throughout our history-is one thing that makes our culture and our history unique from the rest of the world. Many people I talk with at Tea Party protests and in my community are really worried about the ill-conceived policies that President Obama and the Democrats are trying to inflict upon us – from limiting our freedom to produce and use energy, through controlling and rationing health care, to raising our taxes. But, when I see so many people at protests standing up for economic and political liberty, I know that the Democrats will not succeed for long in their attempts to increase government control over our lives and limit our freedoms. I believe we will ultimately be successful in defeating these liberals. They will not rule over us for long. In spite of your frustrations, please do not give up on America. We must continue to “stand fast” against those liberal policies that threaten to destroy our way of life. We cannot sit down or give up. This weekend, let us again be inspired to action by remembering Todd Beamer’s now famous words, “Let’s Roll.” Let’s stand up and “Vote them Out!” in 2009, 2010, and especially 2012.
