This past weekend, Sara Mohsin (Owner of Mohsin Mortgage Corporation) joined me on the program with some general thoughts on the economy and some updates on the mortgage industry. Tom Jones, an attorney with the law firm Jones Day, also joined me with some expert legal opinions on “preemption” & the supremacy clause in the U.S. Constitution, and how they apply to Arizona’s immigration bill.

There was some good news regarding Obamacare this past week. First, a federal judge (U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson) ruled that the lawsuit filed by states against the individual mandate in the new healthcare law will move forward. Hudson wrote in his opinion, “While this case raises a host of complex constitutional issues, all seem to distill to the single question of whether or not Congress has the power to regulate — and tax — a citizen’s decision not to participate in interstate commerce.” And second, the citizens of Missouri voted overwhelmingly (71% to 29%) to ban federally mandated health insurance in their state (proposition C). Although not enforceable on its own, the results of the vote demonstrate that Obamacare’s unpopularity continues to grow. The more that Americans learn about this terrible law, the more they reject it.

Unfortunately, in spite of these significant political and legal victories, the news flow was still overwhelmingly negative this past week. The economy lost another 131,000 jobs in July, food stamp use hit a record 40.8 million Americans in May, and General Motors donated $41,000 to liberal politicians after receiving tens of billions in tax payer bailouts. In addition, the Department of Justice figured out a way to fund ACORN and ACORN like groups without the consent of Congress, Obama may spend another $100 billion to “forgive” underwater mortgages, Iran continues to pursue the development of nuclear weapons, and a new Chinese missile (the Dong Feng 21D) has been designed specifically to sink U.S. aircraft carriers and may change the balance of power in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
